Divinely Inspired Detour
A few blocks away, Brian’s dad arrived home. He noted the aroma of simmering tomatoes. “Smells heavenly, dear.”
Brian’s mom was busy in the kitchen, preparing dinner. “Hi, honey,” she set down the wooden spoon on the orange ceramic spoon rest and went to kiss her husband. “Did you call Brian? Is he coming for dinner?”
“Oh, well, I called, but I never even got to ask him about dinner. He didn’t seem to be in the mood for company. It was a very brief phone call.” He walked across the kitchen and set his Bible down on the work table, near the phone, then picked up the pile of mail and phone messages and began flipping through them.
“Well, that’s too bad. I really feel God leading me to introduce him to Susan. Melissa and Matthew are with their father this weekend, and that always makes her so nervous. I thought she could use a distraction, so I invited her over for dinner, too. It would’ve been really nice if Brian were here.” She moved back to the stove, gave the sauce a stir, and left a coating on the spoon so she could taste it. She blew gently on the spoon.
